How to Prune Alstroemeria

A go-to flower for the bouquet and corsage market, the Peruvian lily (Alstromeria) comes in a wide range of colors to enhance any garden. This perennial needs light pruning during the season and annual cutting back as part of your fall cleanup. Alstromeria blooms from spring to summer or summer to fall, depending on the cultivar. The plant propagates itself through rhizomes, meaning one patch of Peruvian lily will spread through underground roots, leaving you with more flowers to enjoy.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut flowers and place them in your home for enjoyment. Alstromeria lasts for a long time when cut, and thinning out the flowerbed helps promote air circulation. When clipping flowers, cut off the stems at ground level then trim then back if necessary.

    • 2

Deadhead alstromeria by removing the spent blossoms from the stems as they fade. This promotes the growth of new flowers and helps keep your alstromeria attractive. Also prune off bent, broken or damaged branches if they occur, to keep the plant upright.

    • 3

Prune remaining alstromeria down to the ground in summer or autumn, depending on when your variety ceases blooming. Dispose of the cut stems.
