How to Grow a Lotus at Home

The lotus flower is mentioned throughout history as a symbol of rebirth and purity. It is a water plant with a long stem. The flower, which is brightly colored and has multiple petals, floats at the surface of the water. If you have a pond or bog, you can plant the lotus flower at home. The rhizomes of the lotus flower must be contained to prevent it spreading throughout your water garden and choking other plant life.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 32-qt. bucket nearly to the top with pond soil, which is available from most gardening centers.

    • 2

Set the lotus flower rhizome into the soil.

    • 3

Cover the lotus flower rhizome shallowly with pond soil.

    • 4

Cover the pond soil with 1 inch of washed gravel.

    • 5

Place a rock over the gravel to keep the rhizome from floating up. The flower will grow around the rock.

    • 6

Lower the bucket into your pond so that it is 4 inches below the water surface. Place bricks or blocks at the bottom of the pond if it is too deep. The lotus will grow on its own after this.
