How to Grow Morning Glories in Pots

Morning glories are annual vines that grow best in full sunlight. The blooms occur in summer and often last well into the fall. When planted in the ground, the vines can take over a small garden. Growing them in containers helps control their rampant growth. The easiest way to grow morning glories is from seed, which can be found at most nurseries and garden stores. Set growing pots on a deck that has railings or near a fence, or add a trellis to the garden, so the vines have space to branch out. Soon, beautiful white, purple or pink blooms will be adorning your yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Select pots, seeds and soil during the spring. Large pots work better. Pots that are more like window boxes are available, but they are designed for decks and other outdoor areas. Large half-barrels work fine as pots, too.

    • 2

Set all the materials outdoors where there is plenty of room to work. Place a handful of pebbles, stones or small, broken pieces of clay pots into the bottom of the pots. Use enough to cover the bottoms; this assists in drainage.

    • 3

Open the potting soil bag(s) and fill the pots with soil. Dampen the soil with a sprinkling of water -- enough so it's all wet but not muddy. The soil will settle and there might be some sunken areas. Add more as needed to bring the soil level to within about 1 inch of the top of the pot.

    • 4

Place the seeds into the pots at a depth of about 1 inch. Space them 3 to 12 inches apart. Some crowding may work in pots, but if larger pots are used, allow more room between the seeds.

    • 5

Water the pots with a gentle spray until water runs out of the bases. They should be fully moistened. Potted plants tend to drain very rapidly and dry out much sooner than those placed into the ground.

    • 6

Place them in an area that gets direct sun. As the plants grow, guide them to grow up deck railings or a trellis. Alternatively, try tall stakes, buy they do much better on things they can climb with easy sprawling. Weed as needed.
