How to Kill Camellia Roots

Camellias are evergreen shrubs that produce brightly colored flowers in the winter. Some cultivars grow up to 25 feet high. It is more common for camellia shrubs to stay around 10 to 12 feet in height. If your camellia is diseased or you simply do not want it in your landscape, remove it and kill the roots so it does not regrow. Digging up the camellia kills the roots while clearing the way for a new plant to take its spot.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a trench around the camellia starting at the drip line, which is the widest part of the foliage. Dig down until you reach the roots.

    • 2

Cut through the roots with the shovel’s sharp end. Continue digging down and under the plant, getting up as much of the root ball as possible. Cut through any tough roots with pruning shears.

    • 3

Pull the camellia out of the ground when the root ball is loosened. Discard the tree in the trash or cut it up and compost it. The roots will die.

    • 4

Dig up any roots remaining in the hole. Discard them in the compost pile or trash. Fill the hole back in with topsoil.
