How to Care for Potted Lillies

Potted lilies are readily available during late winter and early spring, adding a splash of color to the home after the drab months of winter. There are numerous potted lily varieties to choose from including Easter lilies, calla lilies and peace lilies. Many can be successfully added to the garden, but also thrive in pots if cared for properly. Exact requirements differ from one variety to the next, but most continue to do well if their basic needs are reliably met.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the potted lily in a location that provides the ideal temperature and light exposure for the variety you are growing. Easter lilies do best with exposure to filtered sunlight and daytime temperatures of approximately 65 degrees F, while peace lilies thrive in low light or indirect sun and require temperatures of at least 60 degrees F.

    • 2

Check the soil often to keep it from drying out completely. The amount of water necessary depends upon the lily variety. The soil of both Easter and peace lilies should be kept barely moist at all times while calla lilies do best with moderate moisture. Pour off excess water that drains through to the drip tray as quickly as possible to prevent root rot.

    • 3

Feed with balanced water-soluble fertilizer as necessary. The frequency and rate of application depends upon the lily variety.

    • 4

Prune away unsightly foliage as often as needed to keep the plant looking its best.

    • 5

Cut off the anthers inside the blooms as soon as possible to extend the life of the flower and keep pollen from marring the bloom's appearance. Snip the blooms off as they fade.

    • 6

Move the lily to a suitable garden location after temperatures warm and frost danger has passed in spring. Keep in mind that some lilies are intended as house or patio plants and will not thrive outdoors. Consult the label that came with your potted lily for specific details.
