How to Use Lysol As a Disinfectant for Fungus in Plant Bulbs

Powdery mildew is a fungal infection that affects plants, trees and bulbs found in humid temperatures. Symptoms of the fungus include white spots that spread from the plant’s leaves to the root system and take on a powdery appearance, giving the infection its name. Lysol, a disinfectant that contains the ingredient benzalkonium chloride, is mixed with a safe household product to create a spray that kills fungal infections on plant bulbs.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 2 cups Lysol disinfectant into a plastic spray bottle. Do not use specialty Lysol products for the bathroom or products that contain artificial dyes or perfumes.

    • 2

Add 1/4 cup baking soda to the bottle. Replace the bottle’s top and shake it vigorously to incorporate the two products. The baking soda prevents the powdery mildew spores from spreading the infection.

    • 3

Spray the mixture onto the affected bulbs. Set the bulbs into a dry, sunny area to prevent the fungal infection from spreading.

    • 4

Repeat spraying the mixture every two days until the powdery mildew infection is well-controlled.
