How to Build a Frame for Sweet Peas

Sweet peas have a charming, informal appearance that works well in cottage gardens or along a picket fence. When choosing materials, consider the style of your garden. Rustic sticks are well-suited to a cottage garden. Choose redwood, cedar or bamboo posts for a more formal effect. Decide in advance what type of frame you want, as well as the size of the frame. A teepee frame is the simplest type and works well in pots and planters. Another option is a box frame.

Instructions

  1. Teepee Frame

    • 1

Cut 6 sticks or posts to the desired length, usually around 36 inches high. If you are building a frame for a pot, cut the sticks slightly shorter unless you are using a very large pot.

    • 2

Gather the sticks together and tie one end securely with twine 3 to 4 inches from the tops of the sticks.

    • 3

Spread the sticks out to make a triangular teepee shape, spacing the sticks 3 to 4 inches apart. Set the teepee frame over the prepared soil and plant 2 seeds next to each stick. As the sweet peas grow, they'll climb up the frame, creating a colorful teepee.

    Box Frame

    • 4

Cut four sticks or posts to the desired length, usually around 36 inches long. Cut the two remaining sticks into four pieces 12 to 24 inches long, depending on how large you want the frame. These sticks will make the horizontal supports for your frame.

    • 5

Drill holes in the long sticks 2 inches from the top and 2 inches from the bottom. Drill holes in the smaller sticks as well, one hole at each end. Build the frame to form a box, securing the horizontal pieces to the longer pieces with screws. Tighten the screws with an electric screwdriver.

    • 6

Cut 12 pieces of twine, 40 inches long, or the length of your frame plus 4 inches. Tie the twine tautly to the horizontal bars, spacing the twine 3 to 6 inches apart. The sweet peas will climb on the twine as well as the wooden posts or sticks.
