How to Water a Trumpet Vine

A trumpet vine is a hardy, deciduous vine which produces reddish-orange, trumpet-shaped blooms during the summer months. Also called the hummingbird vine because of its attraction for hummingbirds, this vine can grow up to 40 feet long. Growing in U.S Department Agriculture Hardiness Zones 6 to 10, the trumpet vine is low-maintenance plant once established. However, watering regularly during the growing season is essential for its continued health.

Instructions

    • 1

Monitor the soil moistness around the trumpet vine 4 to 6 inches deep. If the soil is dry, water the trumpet vine.

    • 2

Provide an inch of water per week, preferably early in the morning using a soaker hose directly onto the soil when rainfall isn’t adequate. Watering deeply once a week will promote a healthy root system.

    • 3

Apply a 3-inch layer of mulch, such as shredded cedar shavings, around the trumpet vine to maintain the moistness of the soil.

    • 4

Water lightly in the fall months. Water sparingly during the trumpet vine’s first winter if you live in a dry climate as recommended by the Easy to Grow Bulbs website.
