How to Trail Potted Petunia Flowers

Some petunias, known as spreading petunias, only reach 6 inches tall but can spread their foliage up to 3 feet. These trailing petunias are an excellent choice for container growing because the blooms can be kept off the ground. Trailing potted petunia flowers involves potting them in an appropriate container, and ensuring they have enough water and light to thrive properly. Once they are in full bloom, the petunias will grow thickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a location for the potted petunia that gets full sun. Wait until temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees Fahrenheit before moving the plants outside.

    • 2

Place the potted petunia in a hanging basket, window box, tall plant box, or a porch rail basket in that spot. This will keep the flowers off the ground. The basket or box should be at least 3 feet from the ground.

    • 3

Water frequently enough to keep the soil moist, which may be as often as daily during the hot summer. Apply a flower liquid fertilizer once a week, according to the package directions.

    • 4

Drape the foliage and flowers over the sides of the container as they become longer. Pull off flowers as they fade, to encourage the plant to continue producing new blooms. If the foliage touches the ground, trim it with gardening shears.
