How to Germinate Gypsophila Pacifica

Baby's breath is commonly used in the cut flower industry as a filler between larger, more showy flowers. Gypsophila pacifica is the pink form of baby's breath and it is just as attractive in cut flower bouquets as G. paniculata, the white form. Growing to 3 feet in height, with a 3-foot spread, site G. pacifica in the garden the way you would place it in a bouquet – between rose bushes or among shrubs where the flowers are shown off by the foliage backdrop. Pink baby's breath is surprisingly easy to start from seed sown indoors 6 weeks before the last frost date in your region.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a nursery flat with a soilless, peat-based seed starting mix. Drench the mix with water and set the flat aside to drain until the soil is moist but not wet.

    • 2

Place the G. pacifica seeds on the surface of the soil as they require light to germinate. Mist the seeds with water from a spray bottle and keep them moist during germination.

    • 3

Place the flat on a heat mat if the indoor temperatures are cool. Set the thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit and provide lots of bright, yet indirect, sunlight. Under these conditions, the Gypsophila pacifica seeds sprout within 15 days.
