How to Grow Cremone Mums

Cremone mums are a cultivar of the chrysanthemum family. Like all mums, cremones can be grown in the home garden and bloom from the late summer into the fall. Cremones range in color from white to yellow to lavender. Mums are a good flower for beginning gardeners since they only require minimal care and are quite hardy. Before setting out to plant cremone mums, learn the best way to grow and care for them.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a place to plant your cremone mums that receives full sunlight. Make sure the plants will not receive any direct light there at night, though. Exposure to light at night, such as from street lamps, will stunt your plant's growth.

    • 2

Plant in soil that is moist and well-drained. Do not plant in places where soil becomes too damp since it can rot your mums.

    • 3

Add 2-to-4 inches of organic matter to the soil before planting. Work the material, such as manure, compost or peat, into the soil at a depth of 8-to-12 inches.

    • 4

Space out your mums to give them adequate room to grow. Place them 18-to-24 inches apart for proper growth.

    • 5

Fertilize your cremone mums monthly until the end of July if you plant them in the spring. Use water-soluble plant food and follow directions on packaging. Do not fertilize mums that you plant in the fall.
