How to Plant Larkspur Giant Imperial Seeds

Giant Imperial larkspur (Consolida ambigua), also known as rocket larkspur, is a spring-flowering plant in the buttercup family. The flowers grow along 4-foot stalks in shades of blue, pink, purple and clear white. Some retailers sell packets of mixed color seeds. Although Imperial Giant larkspur is an annual, it reseeds readily returning each season if conditions are right. Plant the Giant Imperial larkspur seeds in early spring, while the soil temperature is still below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Gardeners in the South may get a winter bloom from seeds planted in fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a paper towel and lay it flat on a counter, table or other work surface. Place the Giant Imperial larkspur seeds on the paper towel. Fold it so that it fits in a plastic bag. Seal it in the bag and leave it in the refrigerator for two weeks.

    • 2

Prepare the larkspur seedbed by loosening the soil and adding 2 to 3 inches of compost. Use a hoe to mix the compost into the top 6 inches of soil, and then rake the bed until it is smooth.

    • 3

Spread the Giant Imperial larkspur seeds across the bed 4 inches apart. A random scattering produces the most natural look. Cover the seeds with one-eighth inch of soil or coarse sand. Water the bed carefully to avoid disturbing the seeds. The seeds germinate within three weeks.

    • 4

Thin the larkspur seedlings to 10 inches apart when they reach 3 inches tall. Remove the seedlings carefully to avoid disturbing those that remain.
