How to Make Potted Mums Come Back

Potted mums are welcome gifts on special occasions and holidays, but short blooming periods cause the plants to fade quickly, despite proper care. Mums are perennials that usually return after a dormant winter season, but not all varieties survive. Even potted mums don't bloom year round and require a rest period. Providing the potted plant with adequate care will help you bring flowers back to a full, lush state. Grow a hardy mum with confidence and enjoy bright blooms longer by understanding the needs of your plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the calendar for possible dormancy. Mums may begin to fade in late fall and winter. Place dormant plants a cool area with temperatures above 32 degrees F. Water potted mums only as needed and leave them undisturbed until spring. Remove dead stems once new growth appears.

    • 2

Pull off dead flower blooms immediately to encourage new growth. Add 1 tsp. of liquid 20-20-20 fertilizer to 1 gallon of fresh water in a watering can. Water plants as needed, when the soil feels dry to the touch.

    • 3

Place the potted plant in a place where it will receive indirect light. Exposing plants to indirect sunlight will dry it out and fade flowers.

    • 4

Give flowers a comfortable room temperature between 60 and 65 degrees F.
