How to Grow a Trillium Garden

Trillium flowers are native to North America and Northeast Asia. They are a wildflower that is most commonly seen in wooded areas where the soil is moist but drains well. Trillium plants have three lobed-leaves, and the flowers have three petals. Trillium plants are best purchased from garden centers where they are grown from seed or divided from other plants. Growing Trillium from seed takes five to seven years. Digging Trillium plants from forests may be illegal depending on the species and the area you try to take the plant from.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant Trilliums in spring flowering beds that are fully or partially shaded. Be certain about where you want to plant them as once they are established, moving them is hard on the plant.

    • 2

Mix the rich organic matter into the soil. Soil should be rich and loamy for the best growing conditions for Trilliums.

    • 3

Dig a hole as deep as the pot the Trillium plant currently lives in.

    • 4

Mix the soil you remove from the hole with more of the rich organic matter.

    • 5

Mix some of the rich organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.

    • 6

Place the Trillium plant into the hole. Make sure that the base of the plant is at or just below the level of the soil.

    • 7

Fill in the hole with the soil you removed.

    • 8

Tamp the soil down around the base of the Trillium plant.

    • 9

      Water the Trillium plant thoroughly.

    • 10

Repeat, creating a fairly dense carpet of Trillium plants in an area, as they would grow in the woods. Leave room for them to propagate themselves over time.
