How to Dead Head a Stargazer Lily

Stargazer lilies are an Oriental, or Asiatic, variety. They tend to bloom between July and August and produce fragrant red flowers, with dark red spots. As lilies come from bulbs, the method you use to deadhead them is slightly different from that of other flowers. Deadheading your Stargazer lily correctly is important, as it will ensure that you're left with a strong bulb that's ready to bloom again next year.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch for when your lilies start to fade. You don't want to deadhead them before this starts to happen.

    • 2

Cut off the flower of your Stargazer lily and the very tip of the stem using your garden shears.

    • 3

Provide food for the bulb by leaving the rest of the stem intact. Cut the stem from the bulb at soil level in mid to late fall, once it has browned or yellowed and died.
