How to Grow Narcissus in Containers

Narcissus is another name for daffodils, which grows from bulbs. Growing narcissus in containers, especially the paper white narcissus, is simple. All that’s needed is a growing pot, a bit of soil, some narcissus bulbs and a south-facing window. The only difficulty is determining how many narcissus plants to put in each pot, and providing the right amount of moisture and light. Narcissus grows indoors in containers during the winter protected from the harsh elements, or they grow indoors all year-round so their delicate blooms and fragrant aroma fills the house on a continuous basis.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a growing pot, terra-cotta or plastic, approximately two-thirds full of potting soil and moisten it well, allowing the water to drain out the drainage hole.

    • 2

Place three narcissus bulbs on top of a 6-inch pot or five bulbs on top of an 8-inch pot with the tiny, green shoots pointing up. Fill the pot the rest of the way with potting soil, so that the bulb’s tip is just covered and the green shoots poke into the light. Water the pot well once again, allowing the excess water to drain.

Putting the pot in a dark but warm place for four to five days encourages the bulbs to root. After five days, place the pots with bulbs in a south-facing window where with plenty of direct and indirect sunlight during the day. Keep the soil damp but not soggy. The narcissus plants begin blooming in about five weeks.
