How to Care for Fresh Cut Bupleurum

Bupleurum, commonly called hare's ear, grows as both a wild and a cultivated annual flower. The plant produces large, green leaves from spring through early fall and clusters of small, yellow flowers in the summer. Bupleurum isn't a showy flower, but the foliage and blossom clusters are sometimes used as filler in cut flower arrangements. The bupleurum stems remain green and attractive in the arrangement if they are prepared properly soon after they are cut.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a vase with warm (110 degrees Fahrenheit) tap water. Dissolve a powdered floral preservative in the water.

    • 2

Cut the bottom inch from each bupleurum stem with a sharp knife. Make the cut at a 45-degree angle to provide a larger surface for water uptake into the stem.

    • 3

Trim off any leaves along the stem that will sit below water level in the vase. Remove the leaves flush with the stem.

    • 4

Set the vase in a cool (40 to 60 F) location for two hours. Cool air temperature combined with warm water encourages maximum water uptake by the flowers, resulting in a longer-lasting arrangement.
