How to Use Jewel Herbicide on Firewitch Dianthus

Jewel is the trade name of a pre-emergent herbicide, safe for use around a number of garden ornamentals. According to the product's label, it has tested safe on Dianthus deltoides and causes harm on D. caryophyllus. The Firewitch dianthus, or Dianthus gratianopolitanus “Feuerhexe," is not mentioned on Jewel's label. The best way to proceed under these circumstances is to test the herbicide near one Firewitch to determine its safety before using it on your entire Firewitch bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove existing weeds from the flowerbed. Jewel keeps weed seeds from germinating but does not control existing weeds. Once the product is applied, the soil should not be disturbed, so do the weeding prior to application.

    • 2

Water the Firewitch dianthus but wait until the foliage dries to apply the Jewel herbicide.

    • 3

Calibrate the spreader to deliver one-fourth of a pound of Jewel granules for each 100 square feet of flowerbed.

    • 4

Pour the product into the spreader and spread the Jewel granules over the Firewitch dianthus flowerbed.

    • 5

Water the Firewitch dianthus, providing 1 inch of water to the soil and washing away any herbicide granules that land on the foliage.
