How to Grow Antirrhinum Majus Annual Snapdragons in Containers

Antihhrinum majus is the botanical name for a charming, old fashioned plant, commonly known as snapdragon. A. majus, annual flowering plants, provide a garden full of color and fragrance in spring and summer, in cool regions and winter and spring in areas with mild winters. Snapdragons take to container growing quite well, and the dwarf varieties, such as any in the the “Bells,” “Floral Showers” or “Floral Carpet” series, which grow to only 6 to12 inches tall, are especially suited. Nurseries and gardening centers load up on starter plants in early spring to give you a head start on the season.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the container three-fourths of the way full with a potting soil containing peat moss. Make your own mix by combining 3 parts of potting soil with 1 part of peat moss. Moisten the mix completely, stirring while you add water, until it seeps from the bottom of the snapdragon's planting container.

    • 2

Remove the A. majus snapdragon plants from their containers and use your fingers to gently tease the roots out of the rootball.

    • 3

Create holes in the soil that will place the snapdragon plants at the same depth at which they are currently growing. Place the roots in the holes and fill them with soil. Water the plants slowly.

    • 4

Place the container in an area that provides the snapdragons with full sun. Gardeners in warm climates should provide protection from afternoon sun.

    • 5

Water the A. majus snapdragons to keep the soil evenly moist for the first two weeks after planting. After that, water when the top inch of soil is dry.

    • 6

Give the plants their first shot of fertilizer when you see new growth after transplanting. Use a 20-10-20 formula and apply it twice a month. Stop fertilizing when flowers appear.

    • 7

Pinch one-half inch from the tips of branches when the snapdragons reach 3 inches in height. This encourages the plant to put out new branches, making it bushier, and providing additional flowers.

    • 8

Snip off dead flowers throughout the season to keep the plant from producing seed and terminating the blooming period. Use shears to cut the flowers all the way into the foliage.
