Growing Leucocrinum Montanum

Also known by the common name of sand or star lily, Leucocrinum montanum is a stemless lily found in the western half of the United States. It propagates both through seed and rhizomes, and it prefers sandy or rocky areas like deserts or prairies. It does well in heavy soil so long as the ground is not swampy in nature. The foliage is green and spiked, making it grasslike in appearance, and the flowers are white stars that appear in May and June. The root of the plant is edible.

Instructions

    • 1

Start ripe seed bought from a reputable garden center in trays in a greenhouse, if possible, in early spring. Use a sterile seed-starting mix for best results.

    • 2

Transplant seedlings into 3-inch pots, one per pot as soon as they are large enough to be handled. Keep in the greenhouse through their first winter.

    • 3

Transplant year-old plants in the spring after all danger of frost has passed into alkaline soil that is heavy and moist but not swampy.

    • 4

Provide an area of full sun for the lily, as it cannot tolerate any shade.

    • 5

Keep it watered throughout the growing season, providing less water while it is dormant. The star lily requires consistently moist soil and does not require fertilization.
