How to Repel Aphids From Fuschia

Fuchsia plants, part of the evening primrose family, are often pollinated by hummingbirds, which are attracted to them by their dark red or purplish colors. Just like many other deciduous shrubs, fuchsia plants are susceptible to several pests, including the aphid. Aphids are tiny insects that damage fuchsia plants by sucking out the plant's inner liquids with a sharp mouthpiece. Fuchsia owners can prevent damage by repelling the aphids.

Take care of any ant infestations you might have near your fuchsia plant. According to a webpage on the University of California website, ants kill aphid predators, allowing the aphids to make a home in your fuchsia shrubs. Getting rid of the ants will reduce the chance of an aphid attack.

    • 2

Introduce natural predators of the aphid into your fuchsia garden. Possible predators to choose from include lady beetles, parasitic wasps, syrphid flies and lacewings. These predators will repel and eliminate the aphids without you having to do any further work.

    • 3

Create a mulch out of aluminum-coated construction paper. Spread this mulch around the base of your fuchsia plant to repel the aphids. The aphids don't like the reflective surface.

Mix 2 cups of water with one-half teaspoon of dish soap to make your own homemade insecticidal soap. Spray the fuchsia shrubs with this mixture to kill any aphids that may be lying on the leaves, and to repel any future aphids from visiting the plant.
