How to Grow Heavenly Bluebell Bulbs Indoors

Nothing announces the onset of spring like a beautiful wood full of bluebells, and these flowers are also easy to grow in your own home garden or even inside. While it was once considered bad luck to bring these drooping, one-headed blooms indoors, modern gardeners know that there is nothing wrong with enjoying gorgeous, sweet-scented bluebells in your own home. Growing these heavenly flowers from a bulb indoors can be a wonderful way to experience the beauty of nature without leaving your house.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an area with partial shade to grow your bluebells indoors. They prefer diffused lighting, so avoid placing them right next to a window.

    • 2

Decide whether you want your bluebells to bloom in early spring or late spring. If you prefer an early bloom, plant your bulbs in late summer. For a later bloom, wait until early fall to plant your bulbs.

    • 3

Fill a container with organic soil and dig holes 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep for each of your bluebell bulbs. As long as you space the holes about three inches apart, you can place more than one in each container.

    • 4

Place each bulb in a hole flat side down. There may be a few dried roots extending from the bulb on the end that should go down.

    • 5

Spread soil loosely onto the top of the bulbs and moisten the soil with water until it settles.

    • 6

Fertilize with one application of compost as soon as you see buds start to appear in the spring.

    • 7

Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering your bluebell bulbs.

    • 8

Remove faded blossoms at the end of the season and let the leaves and stems wilt. Leave the bulbs in their pots so that they will grow again next year.
