How to Divide a Paphiopedilum

Paphiopedilum orchids are native to China, India and Indonesia where they grow on shaded forest floors. The unique shape of the flowers has given them the common name "slipper orchids." Paphiopedilum orchids need repotting every year or two to refresh the potting soil. The best time to repot is in early summer when you see new growth. New top growth means that the plant is also growing new roots below ground, so repotting time is an excellent time to divide the plant.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the orchid from the pot and tease it apart into two or three clumps with your hands. Each clump should have three to five fans of foliage extending from its top.

    • 2

Put enough orchid potting soil in the pot to support the plant about an inch deeper than in the original pot.

    • 3

Fill in around the roots with potting soil. Tap the pot on a hard surface from time to time to encourage the soil to settle and remove air pockets.

    • 4

Water the plant, making sure the potting soil drains freely.
