How to Know When to Pick Watermelons

Watermelons can be grown by most homeowners, provided there is sufficient space. The time it takes for a watermelon to reach maturity takes from 70 to 85 days, depending on the variety planted. Knowing exactly when to pick a watermelon for best flavor can be a little tricky, nevertheless -- and this is a fruit that will not continue to ripen once it's taken from the vine. Following a few known guidelines can increase your chances that you'll pick your watermelon when it's sweet and most flavorful.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the melon over to look at the bottom, where it's been resting against the soil. This spot should be a yellow or white color if the melon is ready to pick, rather than pale green.

    • 2

Rap your knuckles gently against the melon. Ripe melons will typically emit a dull thudding sound.

    • 3

Look at the stem, where it connects to the watermelon. In this area you will see curled tendrils. If these have dried and turned brown, the melon should be ripe enough to pick.
