How to Grow Dwarf Mulberries

Dwarf mulberry trees produce fruits approximately half the size of those found on traditional mulberry trees. These smaller versions can be grown by gardeners with limited space, as most reach heights of no more than 12 feet. Like their standard counterparts, dwarf mulberries do best with exposure to full sun and prefer soil that retains moisture effectively. There are many types of dwarf mulberry available, including red, black and weeping varieties.

  Dig a hole deep enough to plant the dwarf mulberry at the depth it was growing in its original container. The hole should be approximately two times the width of the tree's root ball.

  Use your fingers to loosen the roots and plant the tree at its previous level. Return the loosened soil and water deeply.

  Apply 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch beneath the tree.

  Keep the soil lightly moist during the first growing season to encourage a strong, healthy root system.

  Provide supplemental water only during dry conditions after the tree is established. Sufficient moisture is important around the time fruits are forming, as they will fall prematurely if the tree becomes drought-stressed.

  Fertilize each spring with 10-10-10 fertilizer. Follow the package instructions carefully and apply only the recommended amount.

  Prune the dwarf mulberry tree in late winter to eliminate weak or dead branches. Also trim those that are rubbing against each other.
