How to Grow Sapote From Seed

The sapote tree is a fruit-bearing evergreen native to parts of North, South and Central America. It grows from 60 to 130 feet tall, depending upon the variety and produces thin-skinned fruits that range in size from 1 to 6 inches long. The fruits are bright green or yellow-orange and have a somewhat rounded shape. Sapote trees thrive in full sun and will not live if planted in a location with poor drainage. They can be successfully grown from fresh seed; the seeds take between two and three weeks to sprout.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut open a fully ripe sapote fruit and retrieve the seed.

    • 2

Rinse the pulp from the seed and use a knife to remove its firm outer coating.

    • 3

Fill a 1 qt. growing container with lightweight potting soil. Make sure that the container has holes in the bottom to allow excess moisture to escape.

    • 4

Plant the sapote seed with the pointed end turned upward. Leave the top 1/2 inch of the seed above soil level.

    • 5

Water until the soil feels moist, but not wet. Continue to water only when the top 1/2 to 1 inch of soil feels dry.

    • 6

Transplant the seedling to its permanent growing site when three to four sets of leaves have formed.
