Apple trees are deciduous trees that bear fruit. They grow during the warm summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Apple trees have been grown in the Ozark Mountains and will grow quite well with good soil, water and sun. Apple trees need to be pollinated in order for the fruit to grow, as they do not pollinate themselves. Planting one apple tree in the Ozarks is likely to yield a failure in growing apples. Plant a few different types of apple trees around each other to let them cross-pollinate and thrive.
Pear trees will grow in the Ozark Mountains with little trouble. Pear trees can be the easiest of the fruit trees to plant, maintain and produce fruit. However, it does take the pear tree many years to yield fruit from a seedling. The best route to take to have pears sooner is to buy a more mature pear tree from a plant nursery to transplant in your Ozark orchard. Pears can be kept for months if they are picked when they are green and kept in a cool place.
Plum trees are another fruit tree that will grow in the Ozarks. Plum trees are very vulnerable to spring frosts and the Ozark Mountain region is known to have multiple spring frosts. In order to keep a plum tree thriving in the Ozarks, a wall can be built around the plum tree to protect it from the harsh wind and birds looking for a snack. Sometimes plum trees need to be supported by wires, stands or posts. The roots will need to be pruned every five years or so to continue producing quality fruits.
Cherry trees will grow well in the Ozark Mountains with the proper amount of sunlight. They require at least eight hours of sunlight each day. Cherry trees are self-pollinators and multiple trees do not need to be planted for pollination. However, if you are planting the sweeter variety of cherry tree, a couple more trees planted around it will assist in fruit production. Cherry trees need to be pruned for better fruit production. The winds in the Ozark Mountains can be harsh and damage the trees. Make sure to choose an area for planting that has adequate protection from the wind.
