Purchase fresh ginger roots at your local grocery store or Asian market. Choose roots that are plump, with several buds.
Wash the roots in cool water and remove any dirt. Soak the roots in a bowl of cool water overnight.
Fill a 12-inch deep clay or ceramic pot with composted soil that drains well. Lay the ginger roots in the soil with the buds facing upward.
Push the ginger into the soil with the roots remaining uncovered. Add water to the ginger and cover the top of the ginger with a thin layer of soil.
Set the pot in a warm area that receives shade. If the outside temperature is below 75 degrees, start growing the ginger indoors until the temperature becomes warmer.
Water the ginger roots twice a week, allowing the soil to soak up the water. When sprouts emerge, spray water directly on them two or three times a week.
