The filbert tree, also known as the hazelnut, has been cultivated for generations and has many useful properties. It has been grown for firewood, fencing, basketmaking and, of course, food. It is the delicious, edible nuts that most people are interested in. The trees can be propagated from seed or rhizomes. The seeds have an internal dormancy that must be overcome before germination will occur, so special procedures are required to be successful.
Instructions

-
1
Collect seed when the edges of the husks begin to turn brown. This is typically in late summer.
-
2
Spread the seeds out in a single layer indoors to finish drying.
-
-
3
Remove the husks as soon as they have turned completely brown.
-
4
Plant the seeds outdoors at a depth of twice the seed diameter. Planting must be done in the fall, because the seeds require 2--6 months of chilling temperatures before germination will occur. The seeds will sprout in the spring.
