How to Increase Plum Size

Sometimes a plum tree will blossom profusely, resulting in a bumper crop of small plums. Left to mature naturally, these plums will be delicious, but will be barely more than a bite or two in size. To increase the size of the plums at maturity, spend a few minutes thinning the crop just after the fruits form, while they are still the size of marbles.

Instructions

    • 1

Make any necessary pruning cuts, such as removing any broken or diseased branches, making the cut back to live, healthy wood.

    • 2

Locate the lowermost fruiting branch as the starting point.

    • 3

Begin with the plum growing closest to the trunk of the tree on the lowest branch containing fruit. Remove or thin the fruit, taking off as many fruits as necessary so that the remaining fruits are 3 to 4 inches apart.

    • 4

Move to the next highest branch and thin its fruit in the same manner as before.

    • 5

Use a ladder to reach the topmost branches, thinning those fruits so the remaining ones are 4 inches apart. The topmost branches get the most sunlight, so the fruits there will usually be larger than those on lower branches and require a little more space between them.
