Fuyu persimmon trees have a vigorous growth habit. The tree grows up to 25 feet tall and wide. It has a sprawling canopy with drooping branches. Trunks are multiple or single. Foliage is alternate, oval and grows up to 7 inches in length. Immature leaves are yellowish-green and change to a glossy green color at maturity. Fall foliage can change to colors of reds, yellows and orange. In late spring, small cream-colored flowers bloom, tinged with pink. Fruits form after the blossoming stage. Fuyu persimmon trees are self-pollinating. Cultivars include Fuyu, Hana Fuyu and Wase Fuyu.
The fruits have a mild, sweet taste and store well. The four-sided fruits have flesh that is light orange. Fruits average approximately 2 inches long and 2-3/4 inches in width. The persimmons are firm and have a sweet, non-astringent taste even when unripe. Fruits are either seedless or have very few seeds. It is a late-season variety, with harvest occurring November through December. The tree is a prolific bearer.
For proper fruit production and plant growth, grow Fuyu persimmon trees in full sun to partial shade. Situate the tree in a warm area of the landscape protected from strong winds. Consider the fruit tree's mature size when choosing a permanent location. Allow enough open space around the tree for proper air circulation, which cuts down on insect and disease problems. Plant the persimmon in deep, well-drained soil that is loamy. Growing the tree in soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 is optimal, according to the California Rare Fruit Growers. When preparing the planting hole, dig a hole that is two to three times deeper and wider than the root ball. The Fuyu has a strong taproot and loosening the garden soil makes it easier for the roots to spread and establish themselves.
Though relatively tolerant to drought, Fuyu persimmon trees perform best with regular water. Fruit quality is better and larger with regular water applications. If conditions are hot and dry, water the tree two to three times each week. Apply water regularly throughout the growing season and slowly lessen water amounts during winter when conditions are moister. Applying excessive amounts of fertilizer containing nitrogen causes the persimmon tree to drop fruit. Apply a 10-10-10 blend in springtime or late winter, following package instructions. During the tree's youth, prune its branches freely after the blooming season. This care helps it develop strong branches to hold the many fruits. When harvesting the fruits, cut the persimmons from the tree instead of ripping them off the branches. Treat pest problems such as thrips, scales or stink bugs using a product containing pyrethrin.
