Edible Berries on Vines in Florida

Florida is a large state with plenty of area for berries to grow. These berries can be eaten raw from the vine or used for jams, jellies and ice cream toppings. Florida is home to berries like the strawberry, squawberry, blueberry, tangleberry, huckleberry and blackberry, among others. Many of these can be picked from the vine and placed on your morning waffle.
  1. Dewberry

    • Related to the blackberry, the dewberry is an almost black fruit that grows like weeds in the South. It is hard to pick because of the thorns surrounding the dewberry on its vine. The dewberry is slightly smaller than a blackberry and also sweeter. It can be eaten straight off the vine, but is best in a cobbler.

    Loganberry

    • The Loganberry is a hybrid fruit from the blackberry and raspberry. When ripe, it is bright red and a long, ovular shape. It has an acidic taste and is used in jams, pies and even wines. While it grows naturally on a vine, it is usually sold in a syrup form.

    Wild Strawberries

    • Found in places like clover fields, wild strawberries are much smaller than what you will find in a grocery store. These berries are approximately an inch in size and have a very tart flavor. Covered with chocolate, baked in pies or mixed into jam, wild strawberries can offer that bite you need to counteract something overly sweet.

    The Florida Marvel

    • A blackberry, the Florida Marvel, grows wild in the north part of the state. It is a large fruit, but lacks sugar, so it won't be as sweet as other blackberries. With a small amount of sugar added, this berry can be used in jams, as a topping for breakfast foods and juiced for a beverage.
