How to Grow Sweet Tangerines

Tangerines, a variety of the mandarin orange, are medium-sized citrus fruits with a loose peel, making them an easy-to-eat lunchbox addition or snack. Chock full of vitamin C and fiber, tangerines are attractive small trees and are easy to grow. If you live in a region where only mild, infrequent frost occurs, tangerine trees perform well outdoors. In colder climates, grow tangerines in large containers and bring them indoors for the fall and winter, until your final spring frost has passed.

  Plant tangerine trees in well-drained soil, whether you're using a container or growing them in a permanent outdoor location. Also grow this tree in an area that receives full sun. Healthy, happy trees will produce the best quality fruit.

  Dig organic compost into the soil before you plant your tangerine tree. Fertile, slightly acidic soil will result in sweeter fruit. Use one part compost for every four parts of soil.

  Water your tangerine tree deeply when the soil is dry to a depth of about 2 inches. Water more frequently during hot, dry weather. Set a garden hose at the base of your tree and let it run at a medium drip for about 30 minutes.

  Fertilize your tree three or four times each year with a plant food designed for citrus trees or one having an N-P-K ratio of 20-10-10. Feed only during the tree's active spring through fall growing season. Always follow product instructions for correct mixing and application.

  Protect your tree from frost if you planted it outdoors. Stringing Christmas lights on the tree and running them on cold nights can be all that's needed to protect your tree and any forming fruit from frostbite.
