How to Grow Strawberries in Hanging Containers

Growing strawberries in a basket is not only a great way to make use of space but also protects the berries from pests, such as slugs. Berries can be grown inside or outside, depending on the weather and your personal preference. June-bearing and ever-bearing strawberry plants will do equally well in baskets, so the type you choose is up to you. Plants that produce very large berries are better suited to ground gardens as large berries will pull on the plants harder, causing additional stress.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a pot inside your hanging basket if there isn't one in it already. Make sure the inner pot has drainage holes. If it doesn't, drill at least two 1/4-inch holes about 1 inch from the bottom.

    • 2

Fill the inner pot with potting soil about halfway to the top. If the pot is very deep, place a 2-inch layer of small stones or gravel at the bottom to help with drainage.

    • 3

Hold the strawberry plants so that the roots are touching the soil in the pot but not laying on it. Fill the rest of the pot with soil as you hold the base of the plant at the same height as the top of the pot. If you are planting more than one strawberry plant in the pot, lay the tops gently on the edges of the pot while you fill in the dirt.

    • 4

Arrange the plants so that they will grow toward the outside of the basket, eventually draping down.

    • 5

Water your plants thoroughly until water comes out of the drainage holes and hang the basket in a sunny location.
