How to Grow Pomegranate in Containers

Pomegranate trees are known for their sweet and delicious fruit, which contains powerful antioxidant properties, vitamins and minerals. The tree's bark is reddish-brown in color with spiny, stiff branches and green, glossy leaves. In the spring and summer seasons, the tree produces attractive red and white flowers with fleshy pink or red fruit. Pomegranate trees may be grown indoors or outdoors in gardens, yards, greenhouses and containers.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a dwarf cultivar pomegranate tree and an 18-inch wide container from a nursery or home improvement store. The tree should be 12 to 16 feet tall.

    • 2

Fill the container halfway with potting soil. Dig a hole in the soil with a hand shovel to make room for the tree's root ball. Place the root ball into the container and cover the root ball with 1 inch of potting soil.

    • 3

Add 1 to 2 cups of ammonium sulfate fertilizer around the tree's base and water well with a watering can after planting.

    • 4

Place the pomegranate tree either inside or outside in an area with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight.

    • 5

Water the pomegranate tree twice a week the first two weeks after planting to help establish a root system. Afterward, water the tree once a week.

    • 6

Trim lower branches back ¼ inch with pruning shears to encourage healthy growth and fruit production. Cut branches that cross at the area where the new growth intersects with the old. Remove dead or diseased branches and suckers, and discard them in the trash. Add 2-inch layer of organic compost around the plant's base to control weeds and retain moisture. Apply compost one year after planting during the early spring season.

    • 7

Harvest pomegranate fruit three years after planting by picking the bright red, ripened fruit off the tree by hand.
