How to Build a Raspberry and Blackberry Trellis

Raspberries and blackberries grow on long, twining vines, with lush foliage and hundreds of berries per flush. These vining bushes need bright sun, fertile soil and generous moisture, but live and produce for many years with the right care. As large, vining plants, they require support from walls, fences or trellis systems and rot when they sit on the ground. Build your own trellis with everyday items to give blackberry and raspberry bushes a place to grow.

Things You'll Need

  • 6- to 8-foot stakes
  • Wire/twine
  • Clippers/scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Set the trellis system up at planting, when soil is soft and amended. Blackberry and raspberry vines grow quickly and need support within months of planting.

    • 2

Push 6- to 8-foot stakes 2 feet into the ground at the ends of the blackberry and raspberry rows. Use 1 1/2-inch-wide stakes for easy maneuverability. Set the stakes 4 inches behind the planting rows.

    • 3

Set stakes at every 4 feet along the planting rows for security. Keep the stake-and-trellis rows 4 inches behind the planting rows for easier training.

    • 4

String wire or twine from the top of one stake to the next and on down the entire row. Tie the twine or wire off at the end stakes to build your top tier. Repeat with second and third tiers below the top tier, at every 1 1/2 feet. The bottom tier must sit at least 1 foot off the ground.

    • 5

Tie main raspberry and blackberry canes and trunks up to the stakes and tiers. Train the climbing vines along the wires. Use soft twine for tying, and tie loosely to avoid damaging the plants.
