How to Revitalize a Replanted Sweet Potato Vine

Transplanting sweet potatoes is the most common way of planting them in the home garden because you must start them inside to avoid frosty weather. The transplanting process stresses the vines, so careful watering and fertilizing revitalizes the vines. Removing competing plants helps the vines become established in their new spot in the garden bed. Once established, sweet potato vines are low maintenance.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull up any weeds near the transplanted vine. Weeds compete with the vine for water and nutrients and weaken it. If you can't pull them out by hand, cultivate the soil with a garden hoe, but take care not to cut up the transplant.

    • 2

Mix a 12-12-12 water-soluble fertilizer in 1 gallon of water. Pour it on the soil around the transplant.

    • 3

Continue watering the transplant with 1 inch of water a week. If you get that much rain, supplemental watering is not necessary.

    • 4

Lay a 1-inch layer of mulch on the soil around the vine. The mulch keeps down weeds and helps the soil retain moisture.
