How to Grow a Kiwi Tree from Seed

The kiwifruit's soft, green flesh, dotted with dozens of tiny black seeds, makes an attractive addition to a tropical fruit platter. Most kiwi plants thrive in USDA Hardiness Zones 8 and higher, since even a light frost can kill the delicate blossoms. Hardy kiwis are much more adaptable, and they live through the below-zero temperatures experienced during the winters of the northern United States. Start a kiwi plant from seed and enjoy its beauty as a houseplant, or grow it outside and harvest juicy fruits in about five years.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seeds from a kiwifruit if you do not have dry seeds ready. Cut a kiwifruit in half. Cut out a piece of green flesh that contains some seeds.

    • 2

Remove as much of the flesh as possible. Place the seeds in a small cup and fill the cup with lukewarm water. Gently wash the seeds to remove the rest of the flesh. Pour the water out slowly. Set the seeds aside to dry for at least two days.

    • 3

Refrigerate kiwi seeds to aid germination, if desired. Fill a small container with damp perlite. Set the seeds in the perlite and cover the container. Put the container in a refrigerator set to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Leave the container in the refrigerator for four months.

    • 4

Fill a 3-inch container with sterile potting mix. Sprinkle the seeds over the top of the mix and barely cover them with soil.

    • 5

Moisten the soil and put the container in a sealed bag or plastic box. This keeps humidity high so the seeds germinate.

    • 6

Wait for the kiwi seeds to germinate. Take the kiwi seedlings out of the sealed bag or container as soon as they emerge. Sprinkle sand thinly on the top layer of potting mix.

    • 7

Wait for the kiwi seedlings to grow at least four true leaves. Transplant the seedlings to a larger container or, if desired, plant them in a sunny location in the garden. If you live in a cold area, only plant hardy kiwis outside. Most kiwis are very sensitive to cold.
