How to Grow Dawn Giant Leeks

Dawn Giant leeks have the scientific name of Allium porrum and are exactly like standard leeks, but they reach up to 15 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. In addition to its larger size, Dawn Giant leeks also ripen much faster than other leek varieties, offering a harvest that begins in the mid-summer months. Growing this variety is a good option for beginner gardeners because you can plant them directly in the ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until approximately one month before the last frost occurs for your area in the spring. If the ground is still frozen, wait until it thaws before planting.

    • 2

Look for a desirable planting area that contains well-drained, rich soil and partial sunlight. Full sunlight conditions can burn the leeks in summer.

    • 3

Spread 2 inches of compost over the planting area using a bow rake. Mix compost into the top 6 inches of soil using a garden tiller. Set the tiller blade to 6 inches and push it over the soil in side-by-side rows.

    • 4

Create a 1/2-inch deep trench along the entire length of the site using the handle of the rake. Insert the Dawn Giant leek seeds into the trench, spacing them at least 1 inch apart. If you desire multiple rows, space the rows 18 inches apart.

    • 5

Rake the soil back over the trenches until the leek seeds are no longer visible.

    • 6

Water the soil using a garden hose until it is damp to at least 3 or 4 inches. Keep the soil moist until the Dawn Giant leek seeds germinate. After germination, water twice per week with 2 to 3 inches each time.

    • 7

Examine the seedlings and pull some out of the soil until there is at least 6 inches between each remaining plant.

    • 8

Apply a 5-5-5 granular fertilizer to the site once per month using the amount the bag indicates for the size of the planting area. Water the site after spreading fertilizer.
