Fill a 6-inch container with pasteurized potting soil, which is free of bacteria and organisms. Use a container that has drainage holes so water can flow out.
Place the calamansi seed in the container and cover it with 1/2 inch of potting soil. Water the soil to moisten it.
Move the plant to a warm, draft-free location, such as the top of your refrigerator. Leave your calamansi there until the seed germinates and pokes out of the soil. Water the soil when it feels dry.
Place the germinated seed in a location that receives bright light. Continue to water it when the soil is dry.
Find a site for planting your tree outdoors. Calamansi enjoys a soil pH of 5.0 to 7.0, which is acidic, and dislikes strong winds and excess moisture. It can tolerate both partially shade exposure and drought, though the tree prefers full sun. If your climate has a rainy season, plan to plant calamansi just at the start of rainy season. Gardeners in other climates can plant anytime the weather is temperate.
Dig a hole for your seedling that is 15 inches wide and 15 inches deep. Remove rocks and weeds from the hole. Mix the soil removed from the hole with compost so the plant will receive nutrients.
Remove the calamansi seedling from its container and place it in the prepared hole. Push the compost-soil mixture into the hole to plant your fruit tree.
Water the calamansi daily to keep the soil consistently moist.
Fertilize the tree one month after planting with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer, such as urea. Use the recommended dose range for the tree based upon the type of fertilizer you have and the size of the tree. Fertilize thereafter every six months. In general, a 1-year-old tree should receive 50 to 100 grams of fertilizer each time and a 2-year old tree should receive 200 to 300 grams each time. When the tree bears fruit, it should receive 350-400 grams each time you fertilize.
Prune off dead, damaged or diseased branches when necessary.
Watch for plant pests that could harm your growing calamondin. If you see pests or dying leaves or branches, you might have an insect problem. Use insecticidal soap to treat the pest presence.
