How to Grow Honeydews From Seed

Honeydew melons have a creamy, yellowish-green rind and tender pink, white or orange flesh. They have a sweet flavor, similar to that of a cantaloupe. The melons grow best when daytime temperatures are at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Honeydews thrive in full sun and fertile soil that drains quickly. For earlier fruits, start the seeds indoors about six weeks before the last frost of spring. Move the seedlings to a prepared garden site approximately 14 days after the last anticipated frost date of spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill 4-inch peat pots three-quarters of the way with quality potting soil. Plant two seeds in each pot and add water until the soil feels moist.

    • 2

Place the pots in a bright location that maintains a temperature of at least 65 F. Moisten the potting soil when the top one-half inch dries out.

    • 3

Snip the weakest seedling in each pot off at soil level when they are 3 inches tall.

    • 4

Use a garden fork or tiller to loosen the soil to a depth of 12 inches. Incorporate a 4-inch layer of well -rotted manure with the turned soil.

    • 5

Make planting holes the same depth as the peat pots and twice as broad. Place the pots into the holes and cover them with soil, making sure the pot’s rim is no longer visible. Water until the soil feels very moist. Leave a distance of 4 feet between each vine.

    • 6

Spread 3 inches of organic mulch beneath the vines.

    • 7

Water as needed keeping the soil lightly moist. Add moisture at soil level to reduce the risk of disease.

    • 8

Feed with ammonium nitrate just before the vines begin vigorous, rambling growth. Make the application by sprinkling the fertilizer next to each plant and scraping it into the top layer of soil. Apply at a rate of 1 pound for every 100-foot row and water it well after feeding. Repeat the application when fruits start to form.
