How to Grow Indian Mustard

Indian mustard (Brassica Juncea), also called mustard greens, is an annual plant grown for its edible foliage. It has broad, crinkled leaves that grow up to 3 feet tall and can be eaten fresh or cooked. The plants thrive in cool weather and grow readily from seed. Sow the seeds during early spring in regions with mild summer weather. In areas with hot summers, Indian mustard is best sown after temperatures begin to cool in fall. It thrives in full sun, but also survives in partly shaded locations.

Instructions

    • 1

Cultivate the garden soil until it is loose 6 inches deep.

    • 2

Use a garden hoe to create planting rows. Leave a space of 1 foot between each row.

    • 3

Mix 10-10-10 fertilizer with the turned soil at a rate of 4 cups for every 100 feet of garden space.

    • 4

Sow the Indian mustard seeds approximately 1/2 inch deep and water it until the soil feels moist.

    • 5

Thin the seedlings after they develop three or four leaves. Allow a space of 3 inches between each plant. Spread 3 inches of mulch around the seedlings after thinning.

    • 6

Keep the soil evenly moist at all times.

    • 7

Broadcast 21-0-0 fertilizer alongside the plants approximately one month after thinning. Apply 1/2 cup of fertilizer to every 10-foot row and water thoroughly after feeding.
