How to Cut a Banana Stem

Banana plants are herbaceous perrenials made up of multiple trunks comprising banana leaves wrapped around themselves. A true stem starts to form one year after planting a banana plant. This is a flower stem, which dies right after harvest. You can help the plant maintain energy for banana production by cutting the banana stem.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut all sprouting flower stalks -- except for the first one -- at the base of the plant with a machete. This will keep the stalks from regrowing. The one sprout you saved will develop another stalk.

    • 2

Trim the fruiting stalk down 30 inches from the ground once it is harvested. Chop the banana stem at the base three weeks after harvest.

    • 3

Cut any dead flower stalks into chunks to use for mulching for other plants.
