How to Fertilize Pineapples

Pineapples are members of the bromeliaceae family of plants and develop as spiky foliage with the actual fruit appearing at the top center of the crown. Pineapples are tropical species but also grow in southern states in the United States. As with most other plants, fertilizer is a critical part of successfully growing pineapple plants. In addition to choosing the proper composition for the fertilizer, you must apply it a little differently than with other plants.

Instructions

Fill a pitcher with 1 gallon of water and a balanced liquid fertilizer with a nutrient analysis of 10-10-10. If the pineapple is between one to three months old, use 1 to 2 ounces of fertilizer. If the plant is four to 6 months old use 1 to 3 ounces of fertilizer. For plants between 6 and 12 months old, use 2 to 6 ounces of fertilizer. For plants between 12 and 16 months old, use 3 to 6 ounces and for those between 16 and 24 months, use 5 to 8 ounces.

Stir the pitcher up well using a spoon to mix the fertilizer solution.

    • 3

Look into the top center of the pineapple plant to locate the cuplike depression. Pour the fertilizer mixture into the cup until it is full. Then pour the remaining fertilizer mixture into the soil around the base of the pineapple plant.

Reapply the fertilizer solution every six to eight weeks, from spring until fall. Reduce fertilizing to only once per month during the fall and winter months.
