How to Germinate Seeds From Dried Ghost Peppers

The ghost pepper (Capsicum frutescens) or Bhut Jolokia is one of the hottest peppers in the world and one of the most notoriously difficult varieties to germinate. Sprouting these pepper seeds is the first step to raising peppers that rate at more than 1-million Scoville Heat Units. Dried ghost peppers are a good source for obtaining the seeds. Key procedures give you a better chance for germinating Bhut Jolokia seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear rubber gloves and cut open the dried ghost peppers. Scrape out the seeds. Placing them under running water removes attached debris.

    • 2

Inspect the pepper seeds and remove the ones with discolorations and are smaller than the rest. Use only the best ghost pepper seeds for the best chance of germination and growing healthy plants.

    • 3

Place your seeds in a sealable, plastic bag, and then put them in the freezer for a couple of days. The extreme temperature difference wakes the seeds up so they sprout easier.

    • 4

Spray a coffee filter lightly with water until it’s damp and fold it into squares. Position your seeds between the flaps of the filter, so that they are completely covered. Return it to the sealed plastic bag. Spray the filter daily keeping it moist.

Place the sealed bag in a warm area, such as the top of your refrigerator. Check the seeds daily to see when the seedling emerges from the seed shell. Germination times vary greatly, but generally, ghost pepper seeds germinate in two to six weeks.
