Fill the cells in a seed-starting pack with seed-starting mix. You can also use 4-inch plant pots instead of seed-starting packs.
Insert the pepper seed into the soil at the depth instructed on the seed package. In general, the seed should be planted twice as deep as the seed size.
Water the seeds with hot water until the soil settles. Place the tray or plant pot in a greenhouse that maintains a temperature of at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If your greenhouse cannot maintain that temperature, set the tray on top of a germination heating mat set at 85 degrees.
Let the surface of the soil become slightly dry between waterings. When you do water, do so until liquid comes out of the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot or tray.
Keep the tray in a shaded spot in the greenhouse, out of direct sunlight. Once the seeds germinate, you can move them into the sunlight.
