How to Plant Steam Crimped Oats for Germination

Oats make an attractive landscape crop that can be harvested for animal feed or milled into oats or grain for your own consumption. The steam crimping process breaks down the hard oat seed, making the grain easier for horses to digest. Any type of oat seed you grow can be steam crimped or steam rolled after the grain has grown and been harvested. Find a feed mill near you that crimps oats, since you need special machinery for the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the soil for planting by turning it over with a spade to aerate the soil. Break apart soil clods and remove debris, such as rocks or sticks, from the site. Rake the soil back in place with a landscape rake. Do this in the spring once the soil becomes dry enough to be worked.

    • 2

Monitor the soil temperature using a thermometer. Oats can be planted when soil temperatures reach 34 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Dig a furrow 3/4 inch deep for your oat seeds. You can plant oats up to 1-1/2 inches deep if you prefer.

    • 4

Spread oat seeds in the furrow at the rate of one per inch. Cover the furrow over with soil to complete planting.

    • 5

Water the soil to moisten it. Maintain a moist soil until the oat seeds germinate, typically within two weeks.
