How to Grow Aquaponic Carrots

Aquaponic systems consist of a bed, usually filled with gravel, which is attached to a fish tank or pond. Water, which contains mineral-rich excrement from the fish, regularly circulates through the bed and drains back into the fish habitat. Aquaponic systems may be placed indoors or outdoors and maintained year round. There is a myth stating that only green, leafy vegetables do well in aquaponic systems. However, root vegetables, including carrots, can be very successfully planted and cultivated in aquaponics as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a bed within which the carrots can grow. Backyard Aquaponics recommends filling the bed with gravel. Use as much as the bed's holder will accommodate so there is room for a healthy root system to develop.

    • 2

Scatter carrot seeds across the gravel bed.

    • 3

Rinse dirt from the roots of the seedlings and then plant them within the gravel bed. The act of moving around the gravel will move the seeds deeper, where they will take root.

    • 4

Add seaweed extract to the fish tank or pond. This will fill the water with nutrients, which will be transported to the developing carrots, first through the water itself and later through the water as it becomes infused with the excrement of fish that have eaten seaweed.

Check the seedlings weekly by gently pushing back the gravel. Measure the diameter of the developing root. Harvest the seedlings when the root is at least one-half inch in diameter. Harvesting the seedlings will allow seeds to flourish. This process mimics the natural order, through which larger trees shade and slow the growth of smaller ones so that a strong root system has time to develop.
