How to Grow Tangerines in an Earthbox

Earthboxes are containers for growing plants that have a self-watering reservoir. If you have the time and motivation, it’s possible to make one from plastic storage bins, large buckets, plastic garbage cans, cat litter pails or other materials. To save time and get growing right away, purchase an Earthbox through an authorized dealer or online. From lettuce to tomatoes to tangerine trees, Earthboxes allow you to grow garden-fresh fruits and vegetables in small areas such as apartment balconies and patios. Take the guesswork out of watering by letting the Earthbox water your tangerine tree gradually, as it needs water.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your Earthbox where you want to grow your tangerines, in full sun, to avoid moving it after it is too heavy. Follow the instructions that come with your Earthbox to learn how to correctly assemble it.

    • 2

Fill your Earthbox about half full with a growing material that contains coir and perlite or vermiculite. Be sure to pack the soil into the corners.

    • 3

Remove a grafted tangerine tree from its nursery pot and loosen the roots. Set it into the Earthbox to determine if you need to add more potting material: you must completely cover the roots, but be sure not to bury the grafted area on the trunk or leave any of the top portion of the root system exposed above the soil line. Add or delete potting material if needed and then set your tree on the soil surface. Fill to within 1 inch of the lip of the Earthbox with more of the same potting material.

    • 4

Scatter dolomite on top of the soil surface, using the appropriate amount for the size of your Earthbox based on product instructions. Till it into the soil with a pronged cultivating tool to a depth of 3 or 4 inches.

    • 5

Add a strip of balanced fertilizer that is in a dry, granular form to the soil on either side of your tangerine tree. Choose any type of plant food that has an N-P-K ration of 5-5-5, 10-10-10 or 15-15-15. These numbers refer to the amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. There is no need to add additional fertilizer until spring of the following growing season.
