How to Freeze Pear Blossoms After Flowering

The pear blossom is a simple, white flower, which resembles a heart. According to Jules Janick of Purdue University, the pear blossom is symbolic of affection in Western cultures. Display the simple beauty of the pear blossom any time of year by freezing a branch of blossoms in a pillar of ice. The frozen blossoms can be used at a wedding reception as a unique centerpiece, a Christmas church service as windowsill decoration or at home on your table, adding a touch of nature's beauty to your decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a thin branch from a pear tree with an attractive cluster of white blossoms. Cut the branch with sharp shears measuring the length you want to display in the ice pillar.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of distilled water into the container you will freeze the pear blossoms in, creating blank space for an illusion of the pear blossom branch floating. Freeze this water for 24 hours.

    • 3

Set the pear branch in the container atop the frozen base layer of ice. Fill the container with enough water to create the same amount of blank space above the branch as below. Place the container in the freezer.

    • 4

Check the water once each hour. When the ice begins to form, arrange the branch vertically in the container. Allow the water to freeze completely.

    • 5

Remove the container from the freezer 20 minutes before it will be displayed. Tip the container slowly to one side. Slide the frozen pear blossoms out of the container slowly. Display with a ring of pears and greenery around the base.
